Wildfire in southern Oregon destroys homes as lightning sparks more blazes

A southern Oregon wildfire has destroyed six homes and 14 other buildings, and dozens of additional blazes ignited after thousands of lightning strikes lashed the state.
In central Oregon, a wildfire at the confluence of the Ochoco National Forest and ranchland has prompted the evacuation of numerous campgrounds and nearly a dozen ranch homes, Wheeler County Sheriff Chris Humphreys said Monday night. Local fire departments were protecting homes.
The Bailey Butte fire also temporarily closed a 2-mile section of U.S. Highway 26 about 13 miles west of Mitchell, the Oregon Transportation Department said.
The destructive Moccasin Hill fire — named for a longstanding subdivision — began Sunday near the ranching town of Sprague River, about 25 miles northeast of Klamath Falls, fire spokeswoman Erica Hupp said Monday. Many residents keep horses and cattle on plots of 3 to 5 acres, and neighbors have been stepping in to shelter both stock and pets, she said.
The blaze has burned across about 4 square miles, fire officials said, and caused more than 100 people to evacuate before the threat subsided and many returned home.
Another fire spokeswoman, Tina O'Donnell, said 231 structures remained threatened Monday and one minor injury was reported. She did not know if the injury was suffered by a resident or a firefighter.
Walter "Butch" Browning, who operates a general store in Sprague River, said the flames reached the driveway at his home Sunday afternoon, forcing his wife to "get out of there" with a computer, a change of clothes, medications and the dogs. The wind changed direction, he said, sparing his place. He slept in his own bed, confident there were enough firefighters between his house and the blaze that has left burning stumps.
Wildfires are an annual concern for the community, Browning said. He has been evacuated at least four times in his 22 years on the property, and once lost a home, he said.
"I had two houses at one time; I have one now. I'm down to my last house," he quipped. "It's the price you pay for living in paradise, I guess."
A shelter for displaced residents has been set up at the Sprague River Community Center. Only one person spent the night, but more people filtered in Monday to take advantage of food and other services, said Julie Miller, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross Cascades Region.
The fire is believed to have been started by humans, though how it began is still under investigation. It is zero percent contained.
"Our objectives are clear; we will minimize the growth of the fire by utilizing direct attack efforts wherever possible," said incident commander Chris Cline.
Meanwhile, lightning struck Oregon more than 6,000 times Sunday and Monday, touching off small fires by the dozens on both sides of the Cascades. Such a barrage can be expected to cause numerous "sleeper" or holdover fires in coming days, said Robin DeMario, spokeswoman for the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.
Elsewhere in the West, authorities in Northern California say a wildfire started by exhaust from a truck at a marijuana cultivation site led to new evacuations Monday. It was not clear how many homes were included in the new evacuation order in the rural Shasta County community of Igo.
Fire officials previously said the Bully Fire, which started on Friday, was threatening 15 homes after destroying eight homes and 10 other structures.
A 27-year-old Sacramento man, Freddie Alexander Smoke III, was arrested on suspicion of causing the blaze. Fire crews have been hindered by steep terrain, dry conditions and triple-digit heat.
In Idaho, the Boise County Sheriff's Office asked residents of about 60 homes east of Alder Creek in Garden Valley to voluntarily evacuate because of the Calder Fire. It's one of about 20 blazes sparked by lightning across the Boise National Forest during a storm Sunday night.
Firefighters got a better handle Monday on a wildfire burning in central Washington.
The Mills Canyon fire was 34 percent contained by Monday night, fire officials said. It remains about 35 square miles. The area near Entiat saw a few lightning strikes Monday but no new fire starts, fire spokesman Vladimir Steblina said.
Residents of three dozen homes have been told to evacuate. Officials notified residents of about 500 other homes to watch fire updates and be prepared to leave.

Summer's prime time for amusement park-centered vacations, but how does your favorite stack up? Choosing where to make your summer fun memories shouldn't be left to chance, especially with the cost of amusement park admission going up every year. If TripAdvisor's just-released list of the nation's top 10 amusement parks for 2014 is to be believed, it seems you need look no further than Orlando for a great theme park vacation, where six of the top 10 parks are located. Gourmet Baby Food Latest Luxury Travel Trend

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
At luxury resorts, the tiniest guests are getting top-notch food. Never mind that these (mostly) toothless tots aren't exactly gourmands. Lately, luxury resorts are touting their gourmet, organic, made-to-order baby foods to the far more discerning: their paying parents. The latest to launch a farm-to-table baby food program is Cabo's Esperanza, An Auberge Resort. The upscale hotel uses local farms and the resort's gardens to make items like baked sweet corn and parsnip carrot, organic butternut squash roasted with cinnamon and banana, avocado and agave. Potty Trainer for Hire Is Latest in Outsourced Parenting Photos: Summer Vacation: The Best Family Beaches On the tony Caribbean island of St. Barth, the Isle de France resort's “Pour les Bébés” menu offers custom blends of fish, meat, vegetables and potatoes. In the Dominican Republic, the Eden Roc at Cap Cana in Punta Cana offers a VIBabies package which promises, in addition to swim diapers and free babysitting, a baby food menu "featuring homemade dishes made from fresh, organic ingredients." The resort said there was no pre-set baby menu, but that guests could request any combination of preferred ingredients to have the food customized for their little one. And while singling out their gourmet baby food offerings may be a new thing for resorts, it's possible the hotel you're staying in on your next vacation will do this for you with just a simple request. But it's worth inquiring ahead of time: Some properties -- and individual restaurants for that matter -- won't even heat up a bottle for baby for fear of being held liable if it's too hot. But all this made-to-order-ness for baby food isn't inexpensive. Starting rates at Esperanza, for example, are $695 per night. And Eden Roc is part of the Relais & Châteaux collection of luxury hotels and resorts. You are using an outdated version of Internet Explorer. Giant 100 metre-wide crater appears in isolated Russian region of Yamal

100 metre crater in Russia The mysterious 100 metre-wide crater filmed by a helicopter passing over the remote region of Yamal, in northern Russia. Photograph: The Siberian TimesResearchers are to investigate a giant hole that has appeared in one of Russia's most isolated northernmost regions, state television reported.
It was unclear what had caused the crater, about 100 metres in diameter.
It was filmed from the air in Yamal – which means "the end of the Earth" in the local Nenets language – where temperatures plummet to -50C and the sun barely rises in winter.
An expedition to collect soil and water samples from the site was planned for Thursday, with two researchers from the Siberian-based Centre for the Study of the Arctic and a scientist from Russia's Academy of Science, state news outlet Vesti reported.
TV Zvezda, broadcast by Russia's Defence Ministry, quoted the person who took the video footage as saying the hole appeared to have been caused from below and that the darker soil around its top indicated the effect of high temperatures.
Yamal, inhabited by indigenous reindeer herders, is one of Russia's richest regions in natural gas. The hole was found near the Bovanenkovo gas field, leading to speculation that it could have been caused by an underground explosion.

Comprehensive chaos until July 2014 make abstract symbolic healing painting.
The constant bombardment of so many ideas, so many colors, so many thoughts and so little time, so much to paint, then came the understanding which embrace the chaos, to accept it as part of the spiritual journey.
A step at a time, the painting has been with lots of patience, the urge to splash the canvas and ready has many times been curbed for better.
I paint very quickly and like healing works with much energy to fill, this painting has lots of healing energies.
It will come as a symbolic abstract painting but there is an unknown factor, which I can move on to the next step.
Until then, take care and God bless you, greetings from Rizwana!

CEO Gives Up Seat for Late Mom

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
Once in awhile, an airline employee does something that goes above and beyond the call of duty to help a customer. But it's probably safe to assume that none of those employees were the CEO of the airline. But it was the CEO in the case of the mother of a 12-year-old with type 1 diabetes earlier this month, according to a Facebook post. Richard Anderson, Delta's CEO, gave up his seat on an oversold flight, making it possible for Jessie Frank to pick her daughter up from a summer camp for diabetic kids, she said. Delta's CEO rode in the jump seat instead. Weather and other issues had delayed Jessie Frank's flight from Washington, D.C., to Atlanta all day long. She was No. 8 on a standby list that showed no more open seats. But then she was waved down the jetway and met by someone with a "vaguely familiar face." He helped her with her bag and showed her to her seat. It was only when the flight was descending that the flight attendant announced there was a special guest onboard and sitting in the jump seat. "Suddenly I realized that 'familiar face' was not an off-duty pilot," Frank wrote in her Facebook post, An Open Letter to Delta CEO Richard Anderson. "It was you, the CEO of Delta, vaguely familiar from the safety video. It was you, Richard Anderson, who gave up your seat for me. It was you, the Delta CEO, who helped me with my bag. It was you, acting just like an ordinary Mr. Anderson, who showed me to my seat. "You, Richard Anderson, the CEO of Delta, did all that for me, just an average, middle-aged, woman with, as far as anyone at Delta knew, no special reason to get home," Frank added. "But more importantly, it was all of your employees that day that did so much helping me to get home -- and now I know why. Because Delta is led by you, Richard Anderson, a dedicated and inspiring leader who so clearly demonstrates, at his very core, that he leads by example, and does not set himself above all those who allow this airline to exist." Frank wrote of how important it was to her to pick up her daughter at camp. "Camp Kudzu gives my daughter 5 days a year when she feels 'normal.' Pick-up day gives me a glimpse into that special world where she's just like everyone else, and she's a little bit of a different person for the rest of the day. By the next day, it's back to the harsh realities of managing a difficult, deadly, incurable disease that kills 1 in 20 before the age of 18. Most people just don't understand how different it is from regular diabetes." Delta Airlines confirmed the incident, but citing the CEO's desire to avoid the spotlight, declined to comment. Looks like Delta has at least one lifelong customer. "I had my special day with my special child. You and your employees gave us both one more day of happiness, and for that, we are both very grateful, Frank wrote. "I have always been a loyal Delta customer, but Thursday solidified that loyalty for life!"You are using an outdated version of Internet Explorer. "Hilarious" airline complaint letter goes viral

The most airlines lawsuit, which are filled with letters so with anger and stories of suffering, it is hard to see any humor in the situation.
But that is not the case with a letter to LIAT, a small airline 21 destinations in the Caribbean. The complaint made, in a letter to the airline, it is so funny that there is a another airline CEO Tweet it asked for his more than 3 million followers.
"How to write-up a complaint - this funny note from a frustrated passenger read" tweeted Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group.
He also blogged.
Not all letters to airlines are complaining. Check out this letter to Delta CEO, after he pick up his seat for a mother of their daughter from a special needs camp late.
The LIAT letter appeared in the British Virgin Islands weekly newspaper, the BVI beacon, earlier this year.
The letter was written by London Arthur Hicks and titled "An open letter to LIAT."
Dear LIAT,
I can tell how closely you allow your passengers is a comprehensive and thorough tour of the Caribbean.
Most other airlines, which I would like which traveled, just rather hastily from point A to B bring me. I was fascinated that we were allowed yesterday am not low one or two but a magnificent six airports to stop. And who wants to fly on the same plane all the time? We have to change and recharge every step of the way!
I especially sampling of the security scanner at each airport enjoyed. I find it absurd to imagine that the people they all be equal. And what is sampled by a variety of island residents, well, I feel as if I already embraced by the majority of the Caribbean have been. I found it also unique that all this, just in time "island was done", because I like having to absorb the atmosphere of various departure lounges. How on our arrival, well, who wants to have a ferry at the end all to take, that fly anyway? I'm glad that the boat away was long time, we arrived in Tortola gestern-- and that all these sounds were closed bars and restaurants.
Thank you, LIAT. I now really understand why you're "The Caribbean airline."
P.S. keep you the bag. I never liked anyway it.
Branson himself was once the receiver what some think is the most epic airline complaint letter of ever. At this writing, the author compares his flight on Virgin with a "culinary journey of hell."

Storm floods Melbourne as high winds push the river Yarra back upstream

Melburnians experienced the rare sight of the Yarra river bursting its city banks on Tuesday after strong winds and rain lashed the Victorian capital.
The Yarra breached its banks at Southbank, flooding footpaths and cycle routes and swelling to the extent that it came close to touching the bottom of the Queen Street bridge. Ponyfish Island, a bar which normally floats on the Yarra, has been swamped.
The Bureau of Meteorology said that while Melbourne has experienced 7.88mm of rain over the past 24 hours, rainfall “hasn’t been torrential.” The swelling of the Yarra has been primarily caused by winds of over 100 km/h, which, in an unusual phenomenon, pushed water from Port Phillip Bay back up the river, virtually causing it to flow in the wrong direction.
“The water builds up into the mouth of the Yarra and it has burst its banks, which it something I don’t recall happening in some time,” Terry Ryan, senior forecaster at the BoM, told Guardian Australia. “You need a lot of things to happen for this to occur. You don’t get westerly winds pushing water up the Yarra very often.”
Ryan said the wind reached speeds of 111 km/h in St Kilda on Tuesday morning, with strong gusts lasting for two hours.
“Those gusts have only just backed off,” he said. “Certainly at Docklands, the water level is the highest we’ve seen in a while. Things will improve in the next few days, showers will become more isolated and while we might have a weather warning again later this week, it won’t be as severe as this.”
A front of low pressure from the Bass Strait has caused the cold, windy and wet weather in South Australia and Victoria, with the front moving into NSW. The front has caused 82mm of rain at Falls Creek in Victoria’s high country, while winds have battered Melbourne and coastal areas.
Victoria’s State Emergency Service said it has received more than 2,000 requests for assistance across the state since midnight, with more than 700 reports of trees falling down and a further 700 reports of buildings damaged.
A total of 79,500 houses across Victoria are without power due to the severe weather conditions.
An SES spokeswoman told Guardian Australia that the flooded Yarra was “not a serious concern at the moment” but that the situation was being monitored.
She added that a number of dangerous incidents have taken place across the state, including a fish and chip shop wall collapsing in Warrnambool, a school building roof ripped away in Apollo Bay and reports of garden sheds cartwheeling down streets in suburban Melbourne.
Meanwhile, the wind caused trucks and even a shipping container to overturn, while the foreshore at Williamstown was swamped by a storm surge. A woman in her 60s suffered minor injuries after she hit by a falling wall in Yarraville, a day after Michael Klanja, a father of two, was killed when a brick wall collapsed on him at Brighton East due to strong winds.
Metro Trains has reported disruptions to train services on four train lines in Melbourne as a result of the weather.

UK infrastructure neglected and at risk from climate change, engineers warn

AppId is over the quota
Die Organisation hat solche "State of the Nation"-Berichte seit 2000 jährlich durchgeführt.

Nebraska town braced for massive cleanup after twin tornadoes strike

Defence budgets slashed flood left the nation at the mercy of wild weather, which brings climate change according to the outgoing Chair of the Environment Agency.

• the Government against David Cameron promises the "greenest ever"; has violated

• large budget cuts which have the Environment Agency (EA) measures against the illegal dumping of waste cut.
And long-lasting winter heavy criticism of Smith and the EA saw flooding, despite the Agency defence budgets by 25% deal with the annual flood with cuts after the coalition took power, which means that hundreds of regulations does not advance went.

But Smith said that provided by Government to repair the damage of many flood protection facilities after the winter flood would suffered additional 270 million pounds available. He said "what we do not can cope with the additional risks that climate change will bring".
A "classic example", he said, was a £250 m plan to protect of the lower Thames from Windsor Teddington. "This is an area of very significant flood risk, as we have seen in the winter. But at the moment the money not on the table."
Smith handle the failure of the Minister again means the existing defences to maintain. "My main message is, maintenance, maintenance, maintenance: this is just as important as the installation of new regulations."
He said: "cuts, is a false economy to flood defence spending of course because, as we the prospect of increased flooding happens more frequently in more extreme forms, we need to be to protect not only the homes of the people, but we need to protect our economy." "We are constantly in this case to the Treasury." He said flood defences of the most cost-effective public infrastructure investment, £8 save damages for every £1 spent. An exception, he noted, was the controversial dredging of the rivers on the Somerset levels, the less value for money made available.

Paterson, cut, funding for adaptation to climate change in the UK by almost half, Smith said: "he recognizes changing weather patterns, and that is something for the climate. But he does not necessarily accept that it is up to the CO2 that we throw into the air. I wish he had a better look at it."

Smith said on Thursday: "our company believes that rich existing arrangements in order to ensure that fracking safe pass operations." At the moment we have the resources for the current level of applications that are obviously relatively small."
But he said the Government is "very sharp" fracking and a fracking boom would have to be provided more money to ensure the environmental safety of fracking.
Smith said that EA budget cuts, including thousands of jobs, had been painful. But he said that at the energy efficiency - leading back-office costs by 33% less - made measures to organize better. The greatest impact outside flood defences would be in the fight against the criminal disposal of waste, he said: "illegal waste sites are extremely offensive and evil for the municipalities, but I'm afraid we'll do less of it."
It was "very disappointing" that Cameron had failed Government, provides the 'greenest Government ever', said Smith, a former Minister of labour. "There is a basic attention, respect and love for the environment among people. Politicians should be the seizure."

Environment Secretary, man-made climate change is simply ridiculous. In a first step David Cameron Owen Paterson must be as quickly as possible the boat."
